We did not see any young owlets in 2016 or 2017. The parent owls behaved as if there were young in the box in Spring 2016, but none appeared; however, only one of the parent owls continued to use the nestbox over the winter and into 2017. During the Summer of 2017, a second owl roosted in the box, so we hoped that they would breed in 2018. This did not appear to be the case and, although we did see a single owl on the veranda of the box in the early part of the year, no evidence of little owls was seen, or heard, until 1/10/2018. Since then we have seen a pair of owls on, or around, the box.
2016 was the first year in which no swallows nested in our stables; however, a pair nested there in 2017 and produced two broods, but none nested in 2018, in fact, very few swallows were seen flying in the area during 2018.
Early in 2010, I set up a camera which recorded images throughout the nesting cycle of a pair of swallows. I have arranged the images in a database allowing one to click through the entire nesting period, which starts with the female swallow examining the nest site, shows the growth of the young swallows, and ends with the chicks leaving the nest for the final time. Click here to go to the swallow page, which gives more detail, and to see the pictures (of which there are 20,227).

The first 5 of the 2010 owlets can be seen in the picture below.
The parent owls roost in the nest box throughout the year except when they have young in the box, or to feed. You may often see them (by looking at the Recent picture updates page) on the nest box during the day when the weather is fine.
